The details

Everything you might want to know.

How word counting works

DailyWrite tracks net new words per day by measuring the change in a document's word count while you write. Words added across every document you open during the day are combined.

  • Pasted content counts. The app can't tell typing from pasting.
  • All deletions subtract. Whether one at a time or en masse, deleting words drops your count, even words written on different days.

DailyWrite is an imperfect tool optimized for writing prose and self-improvement. It's not as robust as a full-fledged word processor, and only works if you write in good faith.

Privacy & data storage

DailyWrite does not store your writing. Only goals and word count metadata live on our side.

What we store
  • Your goals (targets, start/end dates)
  • Daily word count totals
  • Progress statistics
What we don't
  • Your writing content
  • Document titles or filenames
  • Anything beyond your email for sign-in
Good to know

Honest limitations, up front.

DailyWrite is intentionally small. Here's what it doesn't do. Yet.

Can I edit a goal after I create it?

Not currently. Once a goal is created, its target and dates are locked in. You can delete it and start over, but you can't change it in place. This keeps historical progress honest and prevents accidental (or dishonest) target-tweaking mid-run.

Can goals overlap?

No. Only one goal can be active on any given day. If you try to create a goal that would overlap with an existing one, DailyWrite will flag the conflict so you can resolve it before continuing.

Can I create or delete document tabs?

Yes. You can add, rename, and delete tabs—including nested sub-tabs—right from the tab bar above the editor, and the changes are saved straight to Google Docs.

Does DailyWrite ever store my writing?

No. Only word counts, goals, and timestamps are stored. Every character you write lives in your Google Drive. If you ever abandon DailyWrite, your writing will still be accessible there.

What kinds of goals can I set?

A start date, an end date, and a total word target—DailyWrite splits that into a daily target for you. Choose static mode to lock in the same daily target for the whole run, or live mode to have it recalculate each day from whatever words remain.

Why does Google warn that this app isn't verified?

DailyWrite requests Google Drive and Docs access, which Google classifies as sensitive. Full verification requires a paid security review that isn't worth it yet for a small app, so you'll see a "Google hasn't verified this app" screen when signing in. Click Advanced, then Go to DailyWrite (unsafe) to continue—this is expected, and your data stays private to your own Google account.

Can I request a new theme or feature?

Yes! DailyWrite is actively developed, and user feedback helps shape its future. If you have a feature or theme request, please reach out through the official channels.

I found a bug.

If you find a bug, please report it through the official channels so it can be addressed promptly. Your feedback helps improve DailyWrite for everyone! Please note: due to the content retention policy, some bugs may not be fixable and are considered true limitations of the app.
